KITCHEN: design task

Define your needs

  • Start with the “old” kitchen by removing all unnecessary kitchen utensils, dishes and appliances. which you have never used, look around the room and write down in two columns what you like about it and what you don’t. Mark everything that comes to mind: from whether you have enough storage systems and whether their placement suits you, to the color of the kitchen furniture. This will allow you to understand what your new kitchen can inherit from the old one, and what definitely needs to be improved or completely changed.
  • Consider whether you are satisfied with expanding it or making it more open. Most often, the wall between the kitchen and the living room is demolished, combining both rooms into a single functional space. Consider that option – now is the time.
  • To decide on the general plan of the kitchen, decide how you are going to use it. For example, do you need a place just to prepare food, or do you want to design a multifunctional space where you can also organize a dinner or a party for family or friends? For whom, what and how will you cook in your new comfortable kitchen?

Are you satisfied with the old wiring of pipes for washing, filters and other equipment, or will you have to install the water pipe anew?

  1. If the new room plan includes the equipment of today’s extremely popular kitchen island with a sink and kitchen appliances, consider that the distribution of electrical wires and water pipes must be done before you decorate the floor. Think about where to place large and small kitchen appliances, so that using them is as convenient as possible. It is in these places that you should provide the necessary number of sockets.
  2. No matter where you are going to place the sink, it is better to install the dishwasher and washing machine nearby. This will greatly simplify plumbing work.
  3. “Warm floor” systems have recently become very popular. If you are considering such an option, take care of its implementation in advance.

When planning the arrangement of lighting devices, consider that specialists advise using different types of lamps for different areas of the kitchen with the possibility of autonomous adjustment of the intensity of the light flow in each of them.

Additional lighting

Additional lighting – spotlights above the work area, for example, should also be thought about in advance and included in the plan.

Would you like to have a glossy countertop, a separate kitchen island or a large number of cabinets where all your utensils will fit? Are you dreaming of some kitchen appliances that you think will make the cooking process much easier? And in this case, you should think carefully about whether your lockers, for example, will be equipped with internal lights and where to add sockets?

Everyone has their own style of cooking, and every housewife has her own list of priorities, so it is important to make your own wish list from the very beginning. so that the future kitchen meets all the needs of your family as fully as possible. It will also save a lot of time and nerves when it comes to discussing the project with specialists, including electricians.

Як обставити кухню

Complete the formation of the perfect space with the final touches: add a pair of original wooden chairs to a wood-lined bar counter for quick family breakfasts… Or upholster the seats of chairs or stools with a fabric that harmoniously matches the color or pattern of the tiles on the wall above the work area. Even the smallest details, such as handles on kitchen cabinets, can radically affect the perception of space, turning the kitchen from the most ordinary room into an author’s project!

To give the kitchen individuality, instead of buying everything from one manufacturer, look for furniture and accessories that combine well in different places. You can decorate it with souvenirs from travels or finds from your grandmother’s chest of kitchen utensils, which are not usual for kitchen spaces, which will domesticate the space and give it its own special “character”.

If not furniture, then you can “play” in the kitchen with the color of the walls and even… the ceiling! Who said that it must be white? Try simple geometric designs: draw rhombuses, checkerboards on the ceiling, or even simply paint it with stripes. The main thing is to know the measure in the color palette, and it is even better to use only one color. For example, in a Scandinavian-style kitchen – in emphasized cold light tones of white, blue or gray colors, a wide yellow strip on the ceiling will add a “ray” of warmth and a sunny mood.

Find inspiration

How your kitchen will look is a matter of your taste. And for inspiration, you can start collecting photos, clippings from magazines to make an album or a collage on a wish board.” Also, in a separate notebook, mark which surfaces, materials, accessories that you have come across (in the store, while visiting, in the movies) will be harmoniously combined into a harmonious interior ensemble.

Pay attention to the little things: the starting point for the design of your kitchen can be a seemingly ordinary thing, such as a cute saucer, a tile, a chair, a sideboard or even a piece of curtain, suggesting the style or the color scheme of the design.

At this stage, you should not worry too much about the cost of the project, but rather focus on things that really inspire you. So you will quickly understand which style you favor.

If you plan to use the kitchen space to the maximum, it will be difficult to overestimate the help of a professional designer, whose experience and competence will allow you to choose from the multitude of options offered by him – both simpler and completely original, innovative, which you yourself, for example, would not have courage to consider.

When designing a kitchen yourself, you need to follow certain rules for placing household appliances and accessories:

  • Contrary to generally accepted traditions, it is not entirely advisable to mount a SINK in the corner of the room – it is not always convenient. It is more rational to install here, for example, a microwave oven, a stationary water purifier, and store large kitchen electrical appliances.
  • The REFRIGERATOR is protected from the influence of heat from the outside, but it is better not to overload the device. If possible, place it where it will not be in constant contact with the stove or in winter with radiators, and where it will not be exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Keep in mind that the STOVE (cooking surface) and/or oven will have to be connected not only to the gas pipe – they should be placed as conveniently as possible in relation to the outlet and the kitchen hood. Of course, both the gas hose and the electric wire can be stretched anywhere, but will the hostess feel comfortable and pleasant in the kitchen, entwined with a web of hoses and wires?
  • Calculate in advance and as carefully as possible the required NUMBER AND LOCATION OF OUTLETS for electrical appliances. It is better to plan the electrical wiring in advance in order to install (or convert) switches and sockets so that they are easily accessible.
  • As a rule, the sink, stove AND WORKING AREA are placed in one line in the kitchen, placing the latter precisely between the stove and the sink as a “neutral strip”. This combination, tested over the years and by millions of housewives, is the most convenient!
